The US Government Is Killing the Free Internet

For about two weeks now, I have been unable to connect to A/I's server because of name-resolution issues. I initially thought it was purely a technical problem, until I saw a news article on AlternativeTo, which led me to the official announcement published by A/I.

Autistici/Inventati, abbreviated as A/I, is an email service provider committed to anti-capitalist and anti-fascist principles and provides email services to people who share those principles. As a staunch free software advocate and someone on the left, I have been using A/I's services since 2023. Although I gradually made my relvokcor.xyz mailbox my main email account this year, I have never hidden my political views: I am anti-fascist, anti-capitalist, and opposed to all forms of discrimination, censorship, and surveillance.

The ambition of US imperialism to control and dominate the entire world has continued to grow unabated throughout its history. It develops most proprietary software, all of which, without exception, is malware and spyware, and distributes it throughout the world, confining Internet users to their digital prisons. It also imposes mass surveillance globally, including but not limited to the PRISM project. Moreover, the US has repeatedly invoked lofty-sounding pretexts to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries, and has even gone so far as to wage wars against them. From the 1953 coup in Iran and the 1954 coup in Guatemala to the Vietnam War and the 2003 invasion of Iraq, there have been numerous instances of US intervention in the affairs of other countries, often justified in the name of national security, democracy, or the fight against terrorism.

Disrupting and shutting down the service provided by A/I is just a very small step on the US government's broader path of wrongdoing. The US does not want us to have control over our own privacy, security, and computing; it is doing everything it can to take that control away from us.

But wherever there is oppression, there is resistance. When one A/I falls, thousands of A/I will rise. I, along with other people around the world who advocate for software freedom, security, privacy, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and other fundamental human rights, will never stop fighting until we realise a world in which proprietary software, censorship, and surveillance cease to exist.

Just as A/I has said: Now turn off your PCs, get out of your homes, struggle, hug each other and keep on smiling. We are stopping, but the Resistance and ideas do not stop. Stay human.
