(#imotx5mfzz7h) @maurice I switched when Arc included AI to their product. Our IT department told me I had to uninstall and both work and home are on zen now.

(#imqwhlmnq5hp) @prologic For $2 I could find that useful. Not necessarily high bandwidth but if I ever stop email hosting then its just need a Gemini host or a simple http proxy it would be worth it.

Yesterday went to the pet store to buy 3 crickets for our jumping spider. I made the mistake of bringing the wife and kids with.

Now we have a bearded dragon.

(#woprw3rtlifp) @iolfree Funny enough, they weren't the underdogs when you dig into stats, which is a big part of baseball. It was only those on TV who look at ratings that constantly picked against the team.

It is an odd feeling when you have been following a sports team your entire life and they finally reach the championship. For nearly all my life the Milwaukee Brewers have been a mediocre team at best. I mostly listened to them on the radio late at night because their commentator was an amazing story teller. Now that they are going to the World Series it truly feels surreal.

(#ld3b35rvlja6) @david I feel like the bubble will break soon for any company going as deep as movq is seeing. Vibe code with bloat from vague requirements will eventually lead to apps that rot.

We will soon start seeing one new feature added and an old feature breaks. Not because of bad design but because the AI won't be constantly checking old expectations.

The oldest kid's futbol practice is now 30 mins later pushing it fully into darkness. I feel like whenever that happens my mind jumps right to winter mode.

2026-10-12T08:46:48-05:00 ( remote@sh0.xyz )
(#xz4icq46vwja) @david I've had that general feeling about people I talked to online throughout my years. Someone you chatted with for months or years and then one day they are gone. While I want to assume they ghosted me/everyone I have a feelin its far more sinister.

2026-10-11T08:19:00-05:00 ( remote@sh0.xyz )
(#u5a67dfdutha) @prologic HARDWARE crowd funding has burned me it two unique ways. I've had hardware that dropped features to hit the timeline and the flop so there never was an option to buy the full version. Felt like a cash grab more than anything.

Then there are the projects that delay over and over till you forget about them all together. Had one show up two years late at which time not only was the tech obsolete but competitors had made better products.

2026-10-11T07:57:31-05:00 ( remote@sh0.xyz )
(#e2jccuxmikrv) @prologic We recently dropped our One Cent coin so all values end in either 5 or 0. The problem is that between sales tax and people being lazy we still end up with odd totals and then they have to round. The problem is they aren't suppose to round up unless it means not paying sales tax. So they _should_ be fixing the values rather than keeping the extra pennies.

But what is worse is when you find people who don't understand how rounding works. I had one person give me 0.95 extra back because they thought it rounded to the dollar. Got a few that rounded to the nearest 0.50.

(#psm4ygwt7shc) @prologic Very cool. They have had a mapping of a nematode brain for a while as its 302 neurons big. I always thought it would interesting to make a tamagotchi Looks like others have too.

(#bpb2hk4gfdqz) @itsericwoodward On the replay I knew of the double cross and took out all the mines before they did. In true Triple-A fashion the city is safe because one lone character somehow survived being blown up a dozen times more than a real human could take.

(#fa5ksqo7hq3m) @david I used to do it all by hand. Postfix and Dovecot, clamav, etc. But since my bigger use case was having multiple domains and hosting for a few people I eventually moved to iRedMail as its just an install wrapper around Postfix/Dovcot and gives things like user account managment with very little need to turn nobs I just went with that for the last 3 years. Would highly recommend.

Kinda sad that the MST3k mobile app is no longer with us. I grew up watching the show by having my 7th Grade teacher bringing me a VHF recording each week. For 6 years we did the VHF swap, all per their instructions. Keep the tapes circulating.

We caught a new Jumping Spider (our old ones died from old age and the 300 babies were lost to a cold day while we were out of town). Glad to see the new spider caught their first bottle fly right before we have to head out for the weekend. The kids sure do love their bugs.

(#lp57mpw4di6w) @lyse I suggested more as a joke. But it is very "metric" by not using random values like 60 and 24.

Being the only one in my house without ADHD means often I am the one having to remember to complete time based tasks for everyone else. Then having to remind myself to not get annoyed about it all.

Time Management^2

2026-10-06T17:31:57-05:00 ( remote@sh0.xyz )
(#nsn74uhhtmap) @lyse The issues was that custody transfer laws required local time which may be different in different parts of the system.

I think Swatch had it right with their internet time.

(#mejdmrisqy7i) @prologic Scratch that, just had my TLS cert not pointed to via nginx for the new host.

2026-10-05T23:28:29-05:00 ( remote@sh0.xyz )
(#mejdmrisqy7i) @prologic Got it installed @ chat.sh0.xyz. I tried seeding some that were on the image shared earlier but all come up as unreachable. I am using nginx to handle the tls since I have multiple web related services for different hosts on this VPS. Wondering if there is something missing in the setup.

(#wvchp2jjv3gt) @jason Just imaging creating software for pipelines that cross timezones and countries. Having to generate transmission logs when different countries change for DST on different days. Shitty project at my first job. Hate DST with the heat of a thousand burning suns.

(#mejdmrisqy7i) @prologic Awesome, will set it up tonight!

(#wvchp2jjv3gt) @zyak It is ok. Honestly I don't know how you all survive with everything being upside down.

(#e7pvv3drhsab) @jason At 20 people you might just be following everyone.

(#voxymyudg5m7) @oberon The thing people screw up with Gentoo is you need to have a good reason to compile everything from scratch. If you don't then it isn't worth it.

For me it was the fact my computers are alway behind modern tech. And that I have a few of them so I had a build cluster. So I would turn off all the features I didn't need. No build options for common things i didn't use like CUPS, default to cli/tui over X based front ends, save tons of space by disabling extras, etc. It beat installing Debian where a simple app may have GB of extra packages.

2026-10-04T20:51:36-05:00 ( remote@sh0.xyz )
(#bfxkikaoaa3t) @oberon Still fond of my first distro. If Gentoo wasn't created I probably would have never left.

There are TOO many acorns hitting the house. I think the squirrels are attacking us on purpose.

(#mejdmrisqy7i) @prologic Yep if you are looking for more hosts.

(#sikti3lpaxlx) I still haven't figured out a good way to handling the chaotic reply setup for twtxt. Some reply to the main subject, others have a new subject per message in a thread. The tree traversal is easy, but the UX for allowing the different methods is more painful.

(#s4x5oiayaoar) @GopherChat Also I think your clock is off by an hour.

2026-10-02T14:06:42-05:00 ( remote@sh0.xyz )
(#fkvsqeeu4pi5) @lyse It works well enough for me to use so I guess. It is all CGI so crashing is an acceptable way to fail.

2026-10-02T12:18:43-05:00 ( remote@sh0.xyz )
Power is out. Started just before my lunch break and I got a text saying it will be fixed right after lunch is over. Those damn gremlins messing with me.

(#s4x5oiayaoar) @GopherChat We have a big city wide network up here in Minneapolis.

(#tfxf4xdwy5mu) @lyse I'm not a good Python programmer so watch out. In uni and a decade of work I was a hardware and OS dev, so a lot of C and assembly. But I always loved working in Functional Programming so most hobby code was Haskell, OCamel, Racket, etc. My Python will usually be more Functional than Procedural.

(#sqlsztrvmvnp) @zyak Got the mvp release and crawled a lot of people's following list to get a good test case for my Gemini based client. Now to clean it up and be more efficient with the cache.

(#mejdmrisqy7i) @prologic I've got a vps running all my other smolweb and federated stuff. Could always get an instance running there. Project page somewhere?

2026-09-30T17:47:22-05:00 ( remote@sh0.xyz )
(#mfayljjs32im) @lyse nah. my crappy laptop can run a full 3 minutes off the battery before it dies.

(#2x6vr3chd2aj) @zyak I'm the type that must start at the beginning of a series, which is why I have maybe a dozen authors and a few hundred books. Child is formulaic but that's ok when you are just looking for some action.

2026-09-30T14:49:15-05:00 ( remote@sh0.xyz )
(#2x6vr3chd2aj) @zyak I got back on the reading wagon after the pandemic. Now that wagon is on fire and the horses are spooked as we barrel forward towards the canyon.

Stayed up late to finish cleaning up code. Got it all prepped, linted, refactored...and then our power went out.

2026-09-29T18:50:38-05:00 ( remote@sh0.xyz )
(#wgy3wc5twjmj) I have definitely had one of _those_ kind of days.

2026-09-29T17:48:43-05:00 ( remote@sh0.xyz )
(#sqlsztrvmvnp) @zyak This was two lunch breaks worth of coding. Nothing too crazy. When you don't have to deal with web frameworks it is super simple. I ended up replacing most of my web presence with Gemini based CGI. Blogging, source control front end, and now twitter/mastodon. We have a BBS, blog aggregators, search engines and even Wikipedia. Lots of fun to be had in the land of flat text.

2026-09-29T16:31:39-05:00 ( remote@sh0.xyz )
(#sqlsztrvmvnp) @zyak Or just give a screen shot now. https://sh0.xyz/img/dev/twtxt-gmi.png

(#sqlsztrvmvnp) @zyak Its all text based intead of CSS/JS of the big web. Basically a Gopher upgrade. I have a web proxy version on my site that currently shows my status. I'll post pixs once it is closer to done. https://sh0.xyz/cgi-bin/twtxt-gmi.pyz

2026-09-29T00:00:16-05:00 ( remote@sh0.xyz )
